Functional Wall Art! pt 1

Functional Wall Art for the Studio, Part 1

First off, let me say - I am SO excited to have been involved in Cafemom.com’s Influencer Program for Loctite Adhesive. Wow. What a wonderful product. I’ve been so inspired to find things to glue since my package arrived! Ha! Here’s a tutorial for some functional wall art I’ll be using in my studio, with a tiny monster touch to it. :)

First, I got my adhesives and supplies all lined up! Loctite Spray Adhesive, Loctite Crafter’s Glue, and Loctite Super Glue, fabrics, scissors, and cork board pieces. (And dowel rods, but those are for use in Part 2 of this project that I’ll be posting tomorrow when I finish it!)

Then I cut the fabric to size and sprayed down the corkboard with Loctite Spray Adhesive. MAGIC I tell you! It’s so forgiving - if you wrinkle your fabric during this project just peel it up and smooth it out. :) Doesn’t effect the end result at all! After you get the front covered smoothly, you’ll want to trim around your hanging grooves and nip each corner piece so that it folds neatly like a canvas.

Once you’re finished with the nipping, lightly spray the edges of the fabric and fold them over.

Set it up to dry for a bit while you work on the next step!

The next step was a first for me - making a fabric yo-yo, which we’ll turn into a pin cushion! VERY easy though! You just need your fabric, scissors, and a small-ish bowl.

Use the bowl as a pattern and cut out your fabric circle.

Now you’ll just fold over roughly a 1/4 inch and hand sew a loose stitch all the way around, like so.

When you make it back to the starting point, pull the entire thing tight section by section, and stuff it, then stitch it shut.
Don’t be alarmed by the colorful stuffing - I use diced up fabric bits blended into my Poly-fil!
Now for the fun part! Collect your fabric covered corkboard, and put a dab of Loctite Crafters Glue (it’s safe for use on fabrics and doesn’t discolor them!) in your desired spot for your pin cushion! Use a pin or pencil or something to smear the glue around a smidge, then press your completed pin cushion to it for about 30-ish seconds..

Use to be safe, I went around the edges of my pin cushion again with some drops of Loctite Super Glue and pressed for another 30 seconds. It was dry and secure when I lifted my hand!

Like the watch?? I got it at Scrivner’s Creativity Center today! ♥♥♥ There you have it! Your pin cushion is ready to get poked and stabbed!

And you know, I couldn’t let this project be complete with out a little monster touch…

All finished! I gave this piece of functional art a home by my sewing machine! :D

Check in tomorrow for Part 2 of our corkboard crafts!
